Ostomy Bag Covers with StomaCloak-“WannaWearOne” Campaign – Raising Ostomy Awareness Locally
By Pat Camp, President, Muskegon Ostomy Association #338
Dr. Joe Salisz, Muskegon Ostomy Association Medical Advisor and StomaCloak co-founder, was the Central Region ‘s Great Comebacks award winner and a national finalist. In addition, we were joined at the meeting by Laurel Simons, our local WOCN chapter nurse advisor.
The WannaWearOne Campaign
While at the meeting, we had the honor of meeting Susan Burns, the newly elected President of United Ostomy Associations of America.
Susan told us about an exciting ostomy awareness campaign called “WannaWearOne.” She issued a challenge to all Associated Support Group chapters to implement this campaign in their respective communities. Most of all, as President of the Muskegon Ostomy Association, # 338 I am proud to announce we were one of the first chapters to accept and carry out this challenge!
Creating an Ostomy Awareness Event
Because of this challenge, we worked together and our chapter recruited fifty community participants from all walks of life. These participants included bankers, firemen, policemen, nurses, students and friends and families of our local ostomates. Each participant wore an ostomy bag for 72 hours. During the event, participants had the option of putting something into the appliance to make it more realistic.
Celebrating Our Collective Achievements
Finally, after wearing our appliances for three days, we met to share our stories and experience at “The Gathering”. The stories we shared were funny, embarrassing and true to life of many ostomate’s experiences.
The event was so uplifting to our membership! As a result, the Muskegon Ostomy Association #338 has made the decision to make this an annual event. In addition, we encourage other ostomy associations to consider hosting a similar event in their community. In recognition for their efforts, each participant received a certificate of appreciation and achievement.
StomaCloak – A Shout Out to Our Sponsor
Certificates were designed and made possible by StomaCloak who helped sponsor the event.
