Med 5 LLC/StomaCloak of Muskegon, MI has been recognized as one of the 2022 awardees for the Best Small Business Award, presented by Michigan Celebrates Small Business. StomaCloak will be acknowledged on stage at the in-person awards ceremony during the 18th annual Michigan Celebrates Small Business Gala on May 3, 2022.

Success is best when shared, and the event will gather over 800 guests at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, Michigan to celebrate the achievements of this year’s award recipients.

“We’re very honored to be recognized for our work,” said StomaCloak President Patricia Camp, RN. “As a company we’ve overcome so many challenges to get where we are today, and this award lets us take a step back and appreciate everything we’ve achieved.” StomaCloak participates in a tenant program as part of Grand Valley State University’s Muskegon Innovation Hub, and the company says that this program played a huge role in its recent growth. According to Patricia, “The [Muskegon Innovation] Hub and our business coach, Tom Hopper, have been indispensable for us. They have provided so much guidance and business acumen to help grow the company.”

Like most small businesses, StomaCloak has continued growth on its list of goals for 2022. “Our products are designed to help ostomates live fuller, more confident lives,” said Patricia. “Our goal is to spread the word so that more ostomy patients are aware of StomaCloak as an option.”

Med 5 LLC of Muskegon, MI is the company responsible for developing and manufacturing StomaCloak ostomy appliance covers. Its products are designed to eliminate two major barriers to quality of life for an Ostomate: odor and leakage. StomaCloak’s fabric traps and changes odor molecules, significantly reducing waste odor (as demonstrated in a recent scientific study involving sniffer dogs). StomaCloak also wicks moisture to keep skin healthy and provides the first defense against leaks. Co-invented by ostomate Dr. Joseph Salisz MD and WOC nurse Patricia Camp, RN, StomaCloak is designed to boost confidence and encourage more active, worry-free lifestyles for ostomates.

It’s been a tumultuous landscape for business owners, but over the last two years, small businesses have learned to become nimble and innovative in order to accomplish their goals. The 2022 awards gala will put Michigan’s small businesses in the spotlight and give them a chance to share their success stories with the supporters who helped them get to where they are today.

“MCSB has always prided itself on its spirit of collaboration and celebration,” said Jennifer Deamud, MCSB Board Chair. “We love seeing our awardees celebrating one another’s success and sharing in this amazing moment is each awardee’s journey. It’s true— success is best when it is shared.”

Companies nominated for the Best Small Business Award must be Procurement Technical Assistance Centers (PTACs), Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs), or SmartZone headquartered in Michigan.

Awardees in this category are selected based on the following:

  • Demonstrated growth as a small business
  • Embodiment of the American entrepreneurial spirit
  • Strength of the relationship with the SBDC, PTAC or SmartZone
