Our Founding

StomaCloak was founded in 2012 in Muskegon, Michigan. The idea began when nurse Patricia Camp set out to help her husband, a recent ostomy patient who was worried about odors and the possibility of leaks. His discomfort kept him isolated at home, avoiding social events and public activities. Pat made it her mission to restore his quality of life.

To achieve this, Pat partnered with her long-time friend, Dr. Joseph Salisz—a urologist with more than 40 years of personal experience living with a urostomy. Together, they expanded the team to include additional local experts: Urologist Dr. Brian Stork and product engineer Kurt Witham. Their shared goal was simple: create a product that truly improves the daily life of ostomy patients by solving issues with leaks, odors, skin irritation, and pouch noise.

Their solution was a specialty ostomy cover that not only conceals the appliance, but actively enhances comfort, confidence, and health. The cover needed to wick moisture, control odors, be discreet under clothing, and be fully reusable. From that vision, the StomaCloak was born.

While hundreds of ostomy covers exist, most focus only on appearance. The StomaCloak is different. It uses a proprietary fabric engineered to wick moisture and absorb odors through a unique combination of polyester, carbon, and zeolite filtering.

Advanced Moisture Control

The foundation of our fabric is a soft, cool synthetic polyester chosen for its ability to wick sweat, body fluids, and moisture away from the skin. This helps protect sensitive peristomal skin and prevents clothing from becoming damp.  The fabric also helps keep your skin and your ostomy pouch cool and comfortable.

Odor-Absorbing Technology

StomaCloak’s specialty polyester is infused with a proprietary mix of activated carbon and zeolite.

• Activated Carbon (or charcoal) is highly porous form of carbon that is very similar to the filtration already used in many ostomy appliances.  Our activated carbon combines porous materials (wood, coconut, shells, and coal) to trap both airborne and waterborne odors.  
• Zeolite is a non-toxic and highly effective odor absorber unique to StomaCloak.  It combines a group of crystalline minerals made of aluminum, silicon, and oxygen to target liquid-based and ammonia-based odors—especially those associated with urine.  It’s honeycomb structure provides space to trap and hold odor molecules.

Our activated carbon and zeolite can be easily recharged with heat from your regular laundry because our design keeps the odor molecules close to the surface of the carbon and zeolite.  Simply wash your StomaCloak with your regular laundry, using hot water and drying with high heat.  The fabric can be refreshed 30-50 times before needing replacement.

Anti-Microbial Protection

To finish the fabric, we apply a silver-based antimicrobial coating.  This coating helps protect the skin by reducing bacteria growth and keeping the peristomal area dry and healthy.  The antimicrobial coating also helps with odors that otherwise could escape from around your ostomy flange because moisture with higher bacteria levels are significantly more odorous.
